Infertility is quite common, but may seem uncommon because many who suffer from it choose not to discuss it, due to the tremendous emotional and physical pain it can cause. When you are struggling with infertility, whether an inability to become pregnant or maintain a pregnancy, you want to turn to someone who understands and empathizes with your situation.
The initial evaluation for infertility involves a complete history and physical exam and some basic laboratory testing. It is important to document early on whether or not ovulation is occurring. This is accomplished with either a basal body temperature chart or one of the over-the-counter ovulation predictor kits. It is also important to evaluate the male partner by obtaining a semen analysis. If it appears that the patient is ovulating and the sperm count is adequate, then we will concentrate on other possible causes, such as blocked fallopian tubes or endometriosis.
To eliminate these potential causes, other more invasive tests are often needed, such as laparoscopy or an X-ray dye test of the fallopian tubes called a hysterosalpingogram. Our clinicians are trained to treat infertility, but if more specialized treatments become necessary, such as tubal reconstructive surgery, in-vitro fertilization, artificial insemination or the use of fertility injections such as Pergonal, you will be referred to a reproductive specialist. Our trained physicians work collaboratively with area providers to bring you the best possible care.
