Safe Medications During Pregnancy
The following over-the-counter medications and/or suggestions have been approved for use by A Woman’s View’s obstetrics patients. If after trying these recommendations your symptoms do not subside, please call the office for further guidance.
Heartburn/Indigestion
Tums® (good calcium supplement), Zantac®, Prilosec®, Pepcid®, Maalox®, or Nexium®
Cough/Congestion/Sore Throat
- Regular Robitussin® (regular- not DM)
- Vaporizer/humidifier
- Warm salt water gargles 4 times a day
- Mucinex® (regular)
- Sudafed® (regular – not DM)
- Saline nasal spray
- Cough drops
Allergies
Claritin®, Benadryl®, or Zyrtec®
Hemorrhoids
- Preparation H®, Tucks pads®
- Keep area clean
- Warm tub soaks daily
- Avoid constipation
Headaches/Minor Pains
- Regular Tylenol® or Extra Strength as directed on the bottle
- Ibuprofen as directed up to 26 weeks
Constipation/Minor Pains
- Increase bulk and fiber in diet
- 8 to 10 glasses of water a day
- Metamucil®, Citrucel®, FiberCon®, Colace®, or Miralax®, as directed on the bottle
Diarrhea
Kaopectate® or Immodium as directed on the bottle
External Vaginal Itching
- Warm tub soaks with baking soda 2 times a day
- White cotton-crotch underwear
- Dry self thoroughly with hair dryer after bath or shower
- Monistat 7® internally or externally
Swelling/Edema
- Left sided rest
- Elevate the extremity (above the level of the heart)
- Drink 8 glasses of water per day
